Dear Larry,
We recently completed our second project with Federal Building Company. The first was not a project, really, just adding a matching cabinet to a kitchen that was remodeled by previous owners with Woodmode cabinets. For such a small project, we were treated with as much respect, courtesy, and professionalism as if we were remodeling our entire kitchen. We were so impressed, we immediately thought of Federal again when we decided to install cabinets on either side of our living room fireplace to create a media/entertainment center.
Well, our plan to install cabinets quickly expanded to include remodeling the fireplace as well. When you presented the first "dream design" to us, it was quite apparent that, although the design was wonderful, our eyes were bigger than our budget. You cheerfully (perhaps "cheerfully" is not quite the exact word we're looking for!) and quickly went back to the drawing board and presented a scaled-down version of the design which won our approval.
We quickly came to appreciate Federal's "one-stop" design/build process, which eliminated a lot of inconvenience and delays. Most importantly, it eliminated the miscommunication and misunderstanding that could have occurred between us, the designer, and the contractor. We really liked the fact that all issues, from beginning to end, were resolved with one person and one company; responsibility and accountability were never an issue.
Carl Shalliker, the carpenter, was very respectful of our home, and was very conscientious about cleaning up after himself every day. Generally, there was not an entire crew of workers at the house, only Carl. This particular aspect of the work in progress had mixed blessings -- while it increased the elapsed time of the project, it allowed us a bit more control over the project. Since neither one of us was very good about envisioning the design we saw on paper, it was an advantage that construction wasn't progressing at such a speed that small design changes couldn't be made (at no cost!) when we could see what specific details were really going to be like. We understand that contractors generally charge dearly to make any changes....
Federal delivered the project as designed, within the established budget. The quality of Carl's workmanship and his attention to detail was excellent, and you never came back with higher costs. We are convinced that this was the result of your "one-stop process", which allows you to manage your own cost and quality control, as well as all your own scheduling.
We are very pleased with our "new wall", which has changed the feel of the entire room. Instead of making the room feel smaller because we added new cabinets, the entire room looks and feels lighter and livelier. The new fireplace now deserves its role as the focus of the room. In addition to adding beauty and function to the living room, we feel we have really added value to the house.
We will be certain to call Federal Building Company again for our next project!
