Murphy Bed raised

Murphy Bed lowered

SUNNYHILLS ROAD,
OAKLAND

This beautiful Crocker Highlands home had two basement rooms with a partition wall separating them. One was a room with bookshelves, a T.V., a desk and craft space and the other a spare bedroom with a fireplace within a white painted brick wall, see before photo #1. The wall between the rooms came down, the space was gutted and after correcting many structural defects and dry rot conditions the new space contains a den, library, media center, "spare bedroom", home office and 3/4 bath. The "spare bedroom" is a Murphy Bed you see in one photo up into the wall and, in another photo, down. The custom limestone fireplace mantle, surrounding the original fireplace opening, to which a gas log lighter was added, goes to the ceiling which has a faux anaglypta finish to simulate an embossed ceiling covering. There is a media center which the large screen T.V. The Wood-Mode cherry wood cabinetry and paneling were custom made and prefinished at the factory for a stunning quality hand rubbed smooth-as-glass finish. A 6' Marvin patio door and 5' multi-paned widow face the rear yard.

Other aspects of this project entailed the removal of a 3 story brick chimney that shows in the before photo #2 (as a paneled bump-out). Just to the right of the old chimney, in the before photo #2, is the entrance to the new bath. A concrete deck approximately 10' x 12' over part of the old lower room space, was removed and a new tile covered concrete deck 12' x 25' was built to provide covered (but open air on two sides) space off the living room and dining room that allows the feeling of being part of the rear yard landscaping. A new central heating system and laundry room upgrade completed the major portions of this extensive remodel.
